Some knives (normally small to mid-sized folders or bladed multi-tools) are referred to as EDC (Every Day Carry). That is, they are the kind of knife you want to carry always, on person, just for the sake of general preparedness.
Well, I don't get dressed in the morning without Cold Steel's Bird & Trout (CS B&T). Snugged into its "Kydex" sheath with beaded chain it makes a nice little necklace to put on each morning. So I guess you could call Cold Steel's Bird & Trout my EMC (Every Minute Carry) knife.
This IS a very small knife, about six & a half inches overall and weighing about one ounce. The sharp part is not quite two and a half inches. So the CS B&T isn't a substitute for your regular EDC, which would hopefully be robust enough to split some kindling or build a lean-to shelter in an emergency. (My favorite EDC is a Benchmade "Rittergrip".)
But the size and unique design of the CS B&T are its beauty. It is always there, easily accessible, instantly. You don't have to dig in pockets, fumble around with opening a sheath, or open the blade. It is just there, available to either hand. Slip your fourth finger through that loop, pull it from its sheath, and you are ready to go to work.
I live in a rural (some might say wilderness) area and carry a good knife with me when headed out the door (an EDC if headed for town and also a good fixed blade if going deeper into the woods). But whether at home or away, what I reach for most often is the CS B&T and it is usually enough. I suspect that if you get one your experience would be much the same.
On top of all else, this is a great little knife for the money. Cold Steel makes quality stuff.
