I just refinished my 12 year old Ruger 10/22 with Tru-Oil and the finish is excellent, better in fact than the factory finish. 5 years ago I noticed the finish wearing down in spots and some ding marks here and there. I thought that refinishing the stock the way it was would be too hard so I spray painted it a flat black, bad move. Everytime I would take down the gun and clean it some of the solvents I used would always somehow get on the stock which made the paint tacky again for a long time. So I finally said, it's either buy a new stock or refinish it the right way. So I sanded off the paint with a palm sander starting with medium grit paper, then once I got to the wood I switched to a fine paper. I then got the stock wet in the shower and once it dried I hand sanded it again with a fine paper going with the grain. I then used Birchwood Casey's walnut stain on it, full strength and then let that dry overnight. I then started with the Tru-Oil, applying it with a cotton ball all over then rubbing it down with a paper towel to make sure it was even. The first coat of the Tru-Oil was really light. I let that dry for 3 hours then I put another thicker coat of Tru-Oil on and let that dry another 3 hours. Then I took some steel wool and rubbed down the stock lightly until it was smooth but dull. The last application of Tru-Oil was a little thinner than the 2nd and I let that dry for another 3 hours then I went over it with a scotch brite pad lightly. I'm really pleased with the Tru-Oil, it surely surpassed by expectations and it was really easy to use. The smell before it dries is a little sick, but goes away.
