Heavy gauge steel tubing for strength and durability. Securely carries two bikes. Adjustable clamp accommodates most frame tube diameters. Anti-theft cradle has hole for attaching standard padlock (pad lock not included). Lund Aluminum Tray: Made of tread brite aluminum. I was looking for an inexpensive rack to haul an inexpensive mountain bike. As I usually bike alone a two bike rack was sufficient. I purchased this item at an outlet store for $25.00. Problem #1:Would not slide completely into the hitch. I had my mechanic grind the bottom of the rack so it would slide into the hitch. Problem #2: Top plate (only about 8 inches long & 3 inches wide)will not securely hold only one bike. Problem #3: Attempting to secure 2 bikes with different diameter top tubes (i.e. Mountain bike & racing bike) will result in the smaller diameter tube bike being virtually unsecured. I got around Problems #2 & #3 by using 1 inch wood dowel (approximately 12-15 inches long)and sliding a 6 inch piece of pipe foam insulation over the wood dowel. I insert this where I would carry a second bike. I also slide a second piece of foam pipe insulation over the top tube prior to tightening plates as top metal plates will scratch the top tube of your bikes. With the wood dowel in place I am able to securely transport one bike securing same with bungee cords to wooden dowel.If I'm transporting 2 bikes with different top tube diameters,I'll use 2 pieces of pipe foam insulation on the smaller bike tube so when I tighten the top plate both bikes will be secured. Had I paid more for this item I'd be very unhappy. For $25.00,a wood dowel, some foam pipe insulation & bungee cords ; it serves its purpose.....but there are better choices !!!
